Assessment

Assessment at St Joseph's, is carried out by teachers for every subject taught in school.   We assess children by using their scores from standardised tests alongside the independent learning that the children complete in class.  Teachers inform parents of their child's level of attainment at the parent consultation meetings and through the child's school report.

Religious Education

RE is assessed using the outcomes criteria for the programme of study, which is RED - To Know You More Clearly.  This is based on teacher assessment of the children's understanding and demonstration of knowledge in RE lessons.

Reception Class

Children in Reception, complete a baseline assessment (which is provided by the DfE), within the first six weeks of them starting Reception class.  This is then used to measure progress from Reception to end of Year 6.  At the end of Reception, children are assessed on the Early Years Framework which is the standards that children should have to achieve a good level of development (GLD).

Year 1

Children in Year 1, do not start to access standardised tests until the spring term.  In the autumn term, the children's attainment is measured by teacher assessment only.  In June, the children are assessed on their phonic ability to read words by taking part in the Phonics Screen.  This is a series of 40 words (20 real words and 20 nonsense words) which contain all the phonics that the children have learnt in Reception and Year 1 programmes of study.

Year 4

In Year Four the pupils take part in a national multiplication test which is completed online in June. The purpose of the Multiplication Tables Check is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently (within 6 seconds), which is essential for future success in mathematics. It allows teachers to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

Year 6

In Year Six the children complete the National end of KS2 SATs in Reading, Mathematics and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. These are formal tests which are marked externally and not by the teachers in school.

Attainment Levels

Children are given levels of attainment that state:  if they are working towards the expected standard (WT), working at age related expectations (ARE) or above age related expectations (GD) for their year group.
